The BIG picture

By Richmond, J.D.

The Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 makes provision for the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes. It implements European Commission Directive 86/609/EEC and Council of Europe Convention ETS 123. Work is currently underway to revise the provisions of the European instruments, and the resulting changes will have to be reflected in the U.K. legislation and practice. The membership of the Institute of Animal Technology (IAT) need to be aware of what is happening on these fronts, and to contribute to discussion of what changes and improvements should be supported. The considered views of those who work with, and care for, the animals bred and used for experimental and other scientific purposes need to play an active part in identifying and advising where changes are most needed and how they should be implemented.
